By California Sports and Rehab

At California Sports and Rehab, we prioritize accurate diagnosis and effective treatment for nerve and muscle conditions. One of the most valuable diagnostic tools we offer is the EMG NCV test, also known as Electromyography and Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS).

What Are EMG NCV and NCS?

EMG (Electromyography) and NCS (Nerve Conduction Studies) are diagnostic tests that assess the health and function of your muscles and nerves. These tests are often performed together and are commonly referred to as EMG NCV studies.

  • EMG measures the electrical activity of muscles at rest and during contraction.
  • NCS evaluates how quickly and effectively electrical signals travel through your nerves.

Together, EMG NCV and NCS help identify nerve damage, muscle disorders, or issues like carpal tunnel syndromesciaticaneuropathy, and radiculopathy.

Why Might You Need an EMG NCV Test?

If you’re experiencing symptoms such as:

  • Numbness or tingling
  • Muscle weakness
  • Unexplained pain in your limbs
  • Cramping or twitching

…your physician may recommend EMG NCV and NCS testing to determine whether your symptoms are due to nerve or muscle dysfunction.

What to Expect During the Procedure

  1. NCS (Nerve Conduction Study): Small electrodes are placed on your skin to stimulate specific nerves. The speed and strength of the signals are measured.
  2. EMG (Electromyography): A fine needle electrode is inserted into targeted muscles to record electrical activity.

The entire EMG NCV study typically lasts between 30 to 90 minutes and is performed in our clean, comfortable, outpatient clinic.

Benefits of EMG NCV Testing

  • Non-surgical and low-risk
  • Helps pinpoint the source of your symptoms
  • Guides targeted treatment plans
  • Supports diagnosis for both chronic and acute conditions
